Kaizen is the key!
We keep evolving with our routine work. I started my career with Whipples pancreaticoduodenectomy surgery which was abandoned due to severe desmoplastic adhesions with portal vein after trying for 4 hours. Today I’m consistently completing procedure in less than four hours and significantly less blood loss and very less complication rates compared to what is given in text books. My mantra has been ‘evaluate and evolve’. Just assessing my technique and making necessary changes complementing my strengths and skills did help me. Surgeon who cannot evolve is a like suicide bomber. He will kill his skill and his patients too. ‘Kaizen’ – change for the better, a japanese word is now popular among the automobile industries across the world to improve the quality of their products. That change when meaningful and adapted to strengths and weaknesses, will help not only in completing the project but also in setting up standards. When done consistently, that person will be authority.
